The New Anti-Resolution Movement and Why I Won't Join It

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

On New Year's Eve it snowed in my hometown.  It NEVER ever snows here!  Think Palm trees (you gotta see this picture) and 100 degree weather almost year round.  The boy's Grandparents live about 10 minutes from us up in the wine country and this was taken on the way to their house. We bundled the boys up and headed out for a morning of snow play.  I took this snow phenomenon as a sign that the New Year is going to be unpredictable and awesome.

So anywhoo...

I feel like the new cool thing is to say you're not making New Year's resolutions.  Maybe it's because most people who make them don't end up keeping them (I mean I am more than guilty of that) and those people are just tired of letting themselves down or setting themselves up for failure.  Or maybe some people just find it pointless and would rather just start something new when they feel like it, not just at the beginning of a new year. Who knows...

So call me old fashioned but I love and will always love making resolutions at the beginning of the year.  I love the idea of getting a fresh start or an excuse to make changes.  I think as a person you can always strive to be a little better and by writing down goals or things I would like to work on, it helps hold me accountable and more likely to make changes.

So here are a few things that I plan to work on in 2015:
  • Get dressed more.  I want to make an effort to put on actual outfits and get ready opposed to just staying in my sweaty gym clothes all day, which is pretty awesome I know.  It's all about time management for me and I know I can make it happen if I just do a little less dilly dallying in the mid morning after the gym and get my butt moving and in gear.
  • Make date night with my husband a priority and establish a day once a week where we can have someone watch the kids even if it's for a couple hours just so we can get out and talk and re-connect.
  • Get back on the continuous glucose monitoring system for my diabetes (I have an appointment to do so this Friday) and get my blood sugars in better control.  I feel like I have been slacking big time in this very important department lately.
  • Say yes more and say no more.  Are you confused?  Ha!  What I mean is this year I want to say yes more to the things that I enjoy and look forward to and say no more to the things that ultimately stress me out and overwhelm me.  Maybe that's verging on selfish but I'm okay with that.
And there is my list!  Are you a resolution or goal maker?  If so, I would love to hear a few things that are on your list this year as well.

I watch the Chew and Daphne's resolution is the same thing and I thought it was genius! She said say yes to one thing each week you wouldn't normally say yes to and say no to one thing each week you wouldn't normally say no to! I think it should help us do things we actually enjoy instead of things we feel obligated too!

I know you use a Minimed pump (at least I think you do) but you should get the Dexcom CGM...its life changing!! I used the Minimed cgm when I was on my Minimed pump, but I switched when I went to the Omnipod and it is amazing! Tighter control is definitely on my list of resolutions!

Love that snow photo! I can relate to loving the freshness of a new year and a time to begin again. This year I am choosing a word to focus on for the entire year. Adventure :) 2015 is going to be an amazing year. I feel it in my bones! :)

Yes to resolutions! I really like your one about date nights/days. So important and so easy for weeks to go by without realizing it. I need to be more intentional about planning for childcare. This year I am resolving to organize my house! It's a necessity with 3 kids under 5. Where did all this stuff come from?!? Ha it might take the whole year, but I'm fine with little steps leading to big change.

I'm with ya, I love setting resolutions. Why start the year thinking you are already going to fail and not try? Good luck with your resolutions!

I have a list of health goals for this year that I'd like to achieve. Instead of trying to achieve them all at one time, i'm dedicating a month for each one. Let's see how it goes.

My resolution is to continue putting my family videos on CDS to watch them on TV. Also to continue making my scrapbook of my family and my little princess special moments. Putting recent photos in photo album and keep dating and putting a little note on the back when it was taken. I am caught up with my little princess journals. She is 10. She ask me on Christmas when we were looking at our family videos from the passed. " Can I have all the videos when I get older?." I told her "Yes you can keep them all". Priceless! I love reading your blog. Happy New Year 2015!

Amazing picture! I love your plan for 2015. These things are very important. You should take this time for you and your husband. Be positive and do the things you enjoy :)

I am with you! I think goals/resolutions for a new year are great and I will keep making them... even if I don't always meet them! This year I'd like to read 50 books, send more snail mail (I'm hoping for one per week!), and of course birth a child haha. I am really praying and hoping that I will be a calm mom... so I'm working towards that end. It's not entirely measurable but more of a mindset and recognizing things that I need to do ahead of time, etc. to not be so uptight.
