Last night I made steamed clams for the first time. Clams fit into the category of "fancy foods" that I was always scared to try.
I bought one pound of clams. I had NO clue what to do with them. Thanks to this site I figured it out. First I had to soak them in filtered water. This lets the clams breath and they let out the salt water and sand... WAIT WHAT????!! I started wondering why are they bubbling?!! Are they still alive?!! So I called the fish department where I purchased them and asked..yep I sure did. I found out they are still alive! Aw poor little clams. Once I got over the shock..I moved on.
I melted 1 tbs of coconut oil and 1 tbs of minced garlic in a large saucepan. Added the clams. Stirred them around until they were evenly coated. Added 1/4 cup of white wine and got the clams nice and drunk. Had a glass my self :) Waited for the clams to open, which means they are ready.
Since this was my first time ever eating clams..it is safe to say I did a clam good job :)
Ian said they reminded him of "the beach" and they were "a little too clammy" for him haha! I have a feeling writing five star food reviews will not be in his future.

Haha! The "breathing" part is a little creepy! I haven't tried clams yet, but mussels are my wow-this-feels-fancy seafood to cook at home. The technique is the exact same!
However, I couldn't do my own still alive lobster. :)
Coconut oil! Sounds delicious... I'll have to try that next time. Yum!
So what did they taste like to you? Did you end up liking them?
You tackled something I have never had the nerve to do!! They looked yummy!!!
We are now following you and would love for you to visit our blog and follow back if you like.

xo jess love u!!!
P.s. Totally agree, it felt so fancy making this dish! Yet so easy!
OMG those look delicious. I'm a big fan of oysters & clams but not actually COOKING them. The whole thing about still being alive is horrifying to me.. BUT I really just need to put on my big girl pants and get over it for the sake of food. ;] I'll be making some soon. Thanks for the inspiration! hahaha
Absolutely love those with red pepper crostini.
Happy weekend!
Don't forget to enter this giveaway!
i'm not a huge fan of sea food, but those look super appetizing.
Bahaha...I loved when you said the clams were getting drunk. I've never cooked clams before but your recipe makes it seem so easy and oh so delicious.

lol! You need to try mussels next. I hear they're sweeter. You couldn't pay me to put either one in my mouth. The Dad and The Kids, on the other hand, will tear those babies up.

Haha I love your husband's feedback! Too funny. I am soo impressed with you making that! Steamed clams are seriously fancy girl!! Watch out Julia Child! Clams (and lobster) are on the unattainable cooking list for me - it may take me a few more years of cooking to warm up to that! Good job!!

Oh, I just don't want that much interaction with the food I'm cooking.
Wait a minute...I'm the person who volunteered to butcher ducks once we start homesteading...
I NEVER knew how to cook these things. THANKS GIRL!
you were brave! cracked me up about not knowing they were alive and having to call to check. lol
Oh my ... you are brave to cook up "live" food ... good for you for getting over the fact that they were "breathing" and moving on! Not a fan of clams but I love fried clam strips {I know, that is terrible :)}

Did you like them? I love mussels & have been tempted to try them but was a little scared too! They look awesome!
Hey Love,
Those clams looks scary haha, I have never been able to eat oysters or clams, I do not even eat beef! ;)
I just eat chicken and some types of fish, and actually hope to turn vegetarian or at least eat as little meat as possible to spare the animals. Doesn't feel good to eat another living thing but that's just weird ol' me.
I think you are amazing! Being able to cook such a difficult (to me) dish, hehe tell your hubs he is a man of great wealth! ;)

i look forward to your future posts and maybe i'll have to feature how you rock a little black dress in a future fashion post? :)
I would ABSOLUTELY be the same way if I found out they were alive! They look delicious though :D
That sounds so yummy! I love seafood, but I never really cook it.
That looks so good Lindsay. I can't say I've ever had clams done this way, maybe only in a chowder. I've had mussels done like this and they're nice. I'm not sure clams are so readily available here. We've probably got another name for them. I'll definitely try it though. Thanks!

One time I bought mussels and then ended up freaking out because I wasn't sure how to clean them properly! Next time I might just have to try clams...
