Skin Care Tip of the Week *Kale smoothie*

Monday, June 20, 2011

Whenever a client comes to me with a skin problem I always start by asking them about their diet and eating habits. Our skin is the largest organ and everything we put into our bodies plays a role on how your skin looks and feels. If you are loading up on processed carbs, genetically modified unhealthy foods...chances are your skin is suffering.

So today I am going to share with you a kale smoothie I make. Kale is SOOO good for you AND your skin. It is a true SUPER FOOD. Why?
  • It is loaded with antioxidants
  • It is an anti-inflammatory
  • Its loaded with Vitamin K, A and C
  • It is a great source of calcium
  • It is good for your eyes
  • It has a super high mineral content (great for your skin)
  • It has also been shown to retard the growth of certain types of cancer. There is no reason why you should not add it to your daily diet.
Kale Smoothie:
5-6 organic kale leaves
1/2 organic avocado (also a super food)
1 cup filtered water

Optional: I add a little basil to mine..or you can add a banana or a little applesauce if you want it sweeter.

Blend and drink.

If you have any questions leave them in the comment section and I will be happy to answer! :)

I HATE Kale, but I tried a recipe for crispy kale chips the other day and it was delicious!
Rip off chunks of kale and brush them with oil. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and any flavoring you want. Bake in the oven and then cool until crispy like chips! Amazing!

Alright girlie, I'm gonna go right out and say it. This sounds so nasty. lol I'm a super fan of smoothies. I'm a super fan of avocado. I'm a super fan of kale. All mixed together into liquid form? Um, not so much. BUT, like I tell my kids, you can't say you don't like it until you've tried it. (Can I please just eat mine sauteed with garlic and olive oil?)

P.S. I've been following one of your other tips, but I think the growth on my chin is going to need more than a little tee tree oil. Like maybe a band saw.

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

LOL!! It definitely does not taste like a delicious smoothie from Jamba Juice ...but I PROMISE it is SO good for you. You just have to drink it really fast then chase it with a big glass of water ha!

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Oh and sauteed kale is great but you lose some of the powerful nutrients when you cook it. It is best to eat raw. Sorry guys ha!

Ha, I was just going to ask about the taste! I'm all about the super foods-- my husband and I try to add quinoa and edamame to our diet as often as possible-- but I'm hestitant about a green smoothie....maybe if I added a strong flavored fruit. Or peanut better. Does peanut butter and kale sound too disgusting?! I tend to believe that pb can make anything good! ;)

I really like your skin tips! I'm a little hesitant to have this kale smoothie. I didn't know that kale was good for your skin, so that gives me a little more motivation. I just have this thing with drinking something green and goopy....

Love this, and can't wait to try it! I always drink a fruit smoothie in the morning, but I love the idea of using kale. Let the glowy skin begin!! xx veronika

It's amazing how such an ugly looking veggie can make your skin so healthy. Why can't ice cream do the same thing? ;) Thanks for the post!

What a great idea (the smoothie). Have you ever made kale chips? I heard they are really good, haven't made them yet though.

Hi there! Thank you for stopping by my blog. I'm glad you did because I found your blog... I'm a follower! Love your tips and tricks.

I've had pretty bad skin all my life. I'm trying to be aware of what I put in my body because I know it will clear it up most definitely! I drink Green Monsters a lot but have yet to try Kale. I think I'll finally give it a go! Thanks for the recipe!

Ok although it doesn't sound the best when its all listed out there, I'm a huge smoothie fan and definitely willing to try new types all the time. Guess I'll be trying this one soon! Thanks for sharing :)

I like the sound of this smoothie! I often want to make some sort of juice/smoothie but don't wanna blend up a huge batch or have to worry about the majority of whatever I make getting stuck to the sides of the huge blender cuz it's such a small portion. I'm debating getting one of those one-cup-blenders. Do you know of those?
When I have a bad day, I make a HUUUUUUGEEE salad and gorge on it. Turning to food for comfort? Bad. But at least it's veggies. And good for my skin. At least that's what I tell myself.

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Rachael- Yes I have a magic bullet! Best thing ever. No big clean up and no mess!

Jennifer @ Delightfully Noted said...

I've been reading so much about kale this week. It's true though, what you put in your body does affect your skin. Sadly, I've eaten horribly the past few months and my face and back (which never broke out) had definately shown it!:( How about chasing this smoothie with a cocktail? LOL

ashlyn said...

i have actually never had kale before, but i guess i must try it now since i keep reading about it everywhere! :] But is this something you would drink on a daily basis?

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Ashlyn- Yes you can drink it every day! That would be ideal!

Rachael said...

Is Kale very high in fiber? Will it... ya know... cause bloating and such?

Lindsay @ Delighted Momma said...

Rachael- LOL! Yes it is super high in fiber..but I drink it almost every day and haven't noticed any bloating..like say cabbage does!

Rachael said...

Phew! Thanks for getting back to me!

Kale. My sister swears by it. Deep greens. I need more I must confess.

This is such an awesome tip! I have problematic skin and lately I have been paying special attention to my diet {ie: not eating greasy/fried/heavy foods} and my skin has been clearer than it has wever been! Yea!

Gonna have to add these smoothies to my "routine" :)

I love smoothies for breakfast but have never tried adding kale ... hmm, hopefully the blueberries will hide the taste! Can I ask for a tip on hiding/fixing under eye circles? :)

I just saw a recipe for kale mixed with olive oil and baked until crisp in Gwyneth Paltrow's new cookbook...supposedly tastes like chips. Smoothies are a favorite of mine, so I'll give it a try!!

I LOVE kale. It makes me feel good, so I'm not surprised it's good for skin!

simplyvonne said...

gosh i wonder how this taste! I feel like my skin is suffering too :( I need to change my diet a bit so I can have a healthier skin!!

Lauren said...

Oh, this sounds SO gross, but if I was able to chug nasty beer back in college I'm sure I could manage this. I'll have to add it to my "must try" list :)

Unknown said...

I just made one of these with a few tweaks and love it! I used 1/2 c water and 1/2 c organic pressed apple juice and 1 Tbs of raw honey for my sweet tooth and it was perfect! I probably could have used a little less honey, but for a first try it was delicious! I'm going to make another batch or two tonight to feed off of for the next few breakfasts :)

Unknown said...

^ And I added 2Tbs of ground flax seed.
I'm wishing I would have waited until the morning because it's quite filling! :) Thanks for posting this

I've never had kale. I'm not gonna lie, this sounds kinda gross, but I need better skin along with a lot of better things for my body so tomorrow when I go to the grocery store, I'm going to get everything to make them!

Buntons said...

This sounds intriguing, however my doctor has banned kale from my diet, as they are one of the few foods that can cause kidney stones. :D Thank you for the tip!

all time favorite smoothie: Kale and pineapple. It has a big handful of kale, a quarter of a peeled pineapple, a half inch of ginger and a whole (peeled) lemon. blend with a couple of ice cubes and add water if it's too thick. Use the lemon peel in your drinking water throughout the rest of the day.

I make Kale spinach and collard green smoothies. I just pureed them in a food processor and poured them into ice cube trays froze it and then I add 2 "green" ice cubes to banana strawberry apple blueberries raspberries peaches pears mango or whatever fruit i have on hand. Throw in a splash of coconut milk and it is DELISH! And it actually tastes good. My 3 year old LOVES it we have it for breakfast a few days a week. :)

Kale is a great sub for spinach to mix things up, never thought of using it in a liquid form!

If you add a half cup of chopped mango pieces to this smoothie it is actually quite delicious.

I eat Kale almost daily. Use Lacinato Kale for this dish b/c it's not as bitter as the curley Kale and there's a hint of sweetness.

Cut up a bunch of Kale. I usually remove the stem and then cut it into bight size pieces.

Dress with equal amounts of lemon juice and olive oil. I usually start with a tablespoon of each. I add hot pepper flakes (like a teaspoon) and 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese. It's basically like a Caesar salad, but made with Kale.

Lori said...

I forgot to mention the garlic. I add a clove of that as well to the dressing. Really, it's mix it to your taste. Right now I'm eating Kale salad that I made earlier today with a dressing of Apple Cider Vinegar and Flax seed oil. All the other ingredients are the same.

u could just add kale and orange juice together and it would have the same benefits and taste so good and not taste like grass.

clyncross said...

i do green smoothies on a daily basis! u must have a really good blender for kale. not as tender as spinach. i add chobani yogurt or kefir for liquid and some fruit. whatever i have on hand! i didnt know kale was a superfood tho! thanks for all ur useful info. i just found u this evening, and i have already shared u with my pinterest ppl and a personal friend on fb!

I agree with the health benefits these shake gives especially the added avocado. A chiropractor Carlton North posture told me that we should have more fruit intake to make our health better.

ADD FRUIT! Green smoothies are soooo good for you and will taste excellent if you add a little fruit. I like getting a bag of frozen tropical fruit, adding it to the blender with some Kale and some water. Delicious, good for you, and the fruit masks the taste of the greens.

Mona said...

I just made this and, like others, despite the fact that I love kale, avocados, and smoothies, it's not working for me. I DID follow the suggestion to add a banana. That didn't cut it, so I added a couple drops of stevia extract (I have no idea how much of that stuff I'm supposed to add) and maybe a teaspoon of flaxseed oil. I would probably experiment with this and try adding honey and/or other fruit until I can get it to be palatable. But for now, it's very difficult to down...

this kale is very difficult to enjoy in smoothies, I use baby kale, or any baby greens for smoothies. its so much smoother, tastier :)

Is it possible to make this smoothie in bulk at the beginning of the week and save it, if so do you think freezing it or putting it in the refrigerator would be better?

Anonymous said...

add some fruit - pineapple, mango, apple, any berries

Anonymous said...

If you add something red like strawberries or raspberries, it will turn it a brown color...then you can pretend it's a chocolate shake.
